About the South Asia Studies Working Group at Texas A&M

Welcome to the South Asia Studies Working Group!

Established in 2007 by Nandini Bhattacharya (Professor of English and Film Studies, who convened the Working Group  until 2017), the South Asia Studies Working Group brings together faculty and students from across the university with research interests in the region of South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Afghanistan, Bhutan). The Working Group has organized feature and documentary film showings by contemporary film-makers from South Asia, and hosted talks by scholars of South Asia on a variety of topics. On occasion, the Working Group has cosponsored events with counterparts in the region, with the aim of promoting understanding and awareness.

Since 2017 the Working Group is co-convened by Jyotsna Vaid (Professor of Psychology and Women’s and Gender Studies) with various co-convenors (Gisele Cardoso de Lemos (English Department and LAUNCH), Chaitanya Lakkimsetti (Associate Professor of Sociology) and Koyel Khan (Sociology).

Since its inception, the Working Group has received funding support from the Melbern G. Glasscock Center for Humanities Research at Texas A&M. Our events are free and open to all.  If you would like to receive notices about our activities, please contact jvaid@tamu.edu to be added to our listserv.

This website was supported by a grant from the South Asia Institute at the University of Texas at Austin.

We intend for this website to serve both as a repository of our group’s activities and as a place for those seeking to learn more about social science and humanities scholarship on South Asia and its diaspora.
